Room Size Chart: Square Feet, Yards and Meters
Every common room size with its area in all three units and its perimeter, which is the number trim and baseboard are ordered by.
Area is length times width, and the arithmetic is not the hard part. The hard part is that four different suppliers want the same room in four different units: square feet for the estimate, square yards for the carpet, square meters for anything imported, and linear feet of perimeter for the base trim.

Carpet is still sold by the square yard
Divide square feet by nine. A 12 by 14 room is 168 square feet and 18.67 square yards, and a carpet quote will be the second number. The mistake that costs money is comparing a per square foot price against a per square yard price and thinking one supplier is cheaper by a factor of nine.
Carpet also comes on a 12 foot roll, so a 13 foot wide room has a seam in it or a very expensive amount of waste. That is a room shape problem, not an area problem, and no conversion table will show it to you.
Perimeter is what trim is bought by
Baseboard, crown, chair rail and shoe are all linear feet, and the starting number is the perimeter in the last column. Subtract the door openings, add 10 percent for miter waste, and buy in the stock lengths your supplier carries so you are not joining a piece in the middle of a visible wall.
For crown on a room with a ceiling above eight feet, order the longer stock. Splices show worse the higher they sit.
Rooms that are not rectangles
Break the plan into rectangles, work out each one, and add them. An L shaped room is two rectangles. A bay is a rectangle plus a triangle, and the triangle is half its base times its height.

Divide by nine. A square yard is three feet by three feet, so it holds nine square feet.

Divide by 10.764. Going the other way, multiply square meters by 10.764.
What is the average bedroom size?
A standard American secondary bedroom is usually somewhere between 10 by 10 and 12 by 14. A primary bedroom is commonly 14 by 16 or larger. Both ranges are in the table above.
